My cultural artifact is the historical marker placed in front of the 122 Commerce Street Montgomery Alabama that functioned as a slave warehouse in the past owned by John Murphy but is now functions as a headquarter for EJI. I was intent on doing this cultural product because I visited Montgomery, Alabama in the
Laurie Colwin (1944-1992) was born in Manhattan, New York. She was a prolific writer and her very first works were published in the New Yorker. Her first short story collection was published in 1974. Her stories were written about love, relationships, and being happy in general, however, this story “The Man Who Jumped into the Water” is quite a bit different from the others. Hiding behind a persona to get away from reality can lead someone to a breaking point because a person 's troubles catch up to them.
In the essay, “The Plastic Flamingo: A Natural History” by Jennifer Price, she examines the massive popularity of the pink plastic flamingo that happened in the 1950’s. The purpose in writing this essay is to show that she believes that America is materialistic/self-centered and sometimes contradictory. She does this by using tone, allusions, and historical evidence throughout her essay. She begins by stating “the pink flamingo…staked two major claims to boldness. First, it was a flamingo” (1-3).
Can you identify at least one museum myth? 1. The idea that museums provide an objective view of the past, as illustrated by Ross’ conversation with his colleague in which he argues that her interpretation of the cavemen display was
In "The Plastic Pink Flamingo: A Natural History," Jennifer Price offers a critical examination of United States culture through the lens of the iconic plastic pink flamingo, which gained immense popularity in the 1950s. Price's skilled craftsmanship in the text reveals her view of American culture as one that is deeply influenced by consumerism, materialism, and the pursuit of superficial trends. Through her use of vivid language, historical references, and satirical tone, Price effectively conveys her critique of the cultural values and priorities prevalent in the United States during the time period. Price's use of vivid language in describing the plastic pink flamingo serves to emphasize the excess and flamboyance of American culture. She
The first object to catch my eye in the museum was a smaller but ornate jug from the Etruscan period. At first glance I believed the piece to be Greek, with its use of dark matte brownish/reddish, white and black paints used for decoration, and the terracotta material. The black silhouette figure is still clearly visible along with the white defining lines. The ornate patterns look great and have still yet to fade. The only part of the jug that’s seems to be wearing is the foot along with the paint on the face of the figure.
I remember walking into the expansive room in the Arkansas Art Center and just staring at Duck, Duck, Noose. It seemed almost out of place, sectioned off from the rest of the pieces that hung on the walls. I circled around the piece, saw it from every angle, and every angle led me to a new tinge of emotion. Constantly changing emotions, mostly awe, anger, and sadness. O.@uusIy-Iit._A(taposition against the brightly lit pieces of history, cultural s mbolism, and humor mencans xhibition was filled to the brim with through provoking pieces, but only this one has stayed with me.
Cheez-its are no longer allowed to be brought into the school cafeteria because of the horrible incident that happened on November the 14th to the 6th grade student of Sundown, Texas. This occurrence was very sad and dreadful to many people around the area. People held up signs for him and had a candlelight at midnight to celebrate the death of his life directly a year after his death.
Ellie Reynolds advances a rhetorically effective argument on why government should not have regulatory control over offensive Native American mascots in schools across the country. She believes this control is more of a detriment to society than a service. Her article published on the DenverPost.com, “Native Americans Have Become a Political Pawn,” offers a compelling point of view on this controversial issue because Reynolds is a member of the Oglala Sioux tribe herself (Reynolds 659). Along with her strong view against government involvement on this issue, which she considers censorship by political correctness, Reynolds uses her personal experience, historical context, and the negative effects of political correctness to convey her effective
The Class of 2018 of Northern Lebanon High School requests permission from the administration regarding the wearing of commemorative apparel given by school-sanctioned activities to graduation. Graduation is a time where we celebrate all of the achievements we have accomplished as students of Northern Lebanon. Cords, pins, and medals allow us to celebrate these achievements and afford us recognition for these achievements. In the past, only members of one organization have been allowed the privilege of wearing their cords to the graduation ceremony. Students in several other organizations also receive cords, pins, and medals which are symbolic of equally important achievements but are not permitted to publicly present these accolades.
Knowing that I am an arts ' enthusiast, she searched for local events pertaining to art and stumbled across tickets to this event on the OMA websites list of attractions. The intended exhibit of the Antiques Vintage and Garden Show was a bit of a snooze and we ended up spending over two hours in the room designated for the Pre-Columbian art works instead, which happened to line up with the time period of the art works studied in this course of Art History. Through my experience at this exhibit it was revealed to me the importance of the natural world in every Mesoamerican cultures form of art. Specifically, this was proven by the fact that the materials utilized were part of each cultures stomping grounds, literally, in reference to clays and ceramics, also by the subjects and scenes depicted in such works revolved around the natural environment at hand, and lastly shown by the value of animal life depicted through their representation and symbolism. As we entered a small, yet brightly lit room we were overwhelmed by the sheer quantity of authentic Mesoamerican art works and
On our field trip to the Getty villa this semester, we had to choose an art piece that stood out to us among the many there. The task at hand seemed easier than it was, as there were many art pieces that held my attention. One thing I kept in mind was that many of the Greek art pieces were either recovered from the bottom of the sea or were Roman duplicates. This meant finding background and details about them would be challenging. Of the art pieces, the Statue of Hercules or the “Lansdowne Herakles” was the one that I chose to write about.
From my visit to The Native American Voices Exhibit at The University of Pennsylvania a there was a collection of historical memorabilia that indeed celebrates this community. The presentation as a whole set out descriptive displays that certainly memorialized The Native Americans as well as those Native Americans (The Lenape) who were the first to live locally in Delaware. The objects that I chose to take a picture of were at first very visually appealing. After taking a deeper look into those objects, I realized that all had significant value to this community.
Inglee says not to celebrate, because more than a quarter of students who graduate don’t meet the basic reading level (2013). According to Ganem it’s worse than that – a CNN investigation revealed that college athletes in basketball and football programs in public universities only read at an eighth grade level (2014). This is not a new phenomenon – illiterate athletes were pushed through the system and given passing grades to maintain their eligibility (Ganem, 2014). The giving of grades that weren’t earned isn’t reserved for K through
