This quarter I have learned the efficiency of time management and focusing on information that was only necessary for the paper. Since we only had to do one research paper, I decided do my Starting Gate paper on the growing spread of Western nationalism. I found this topic to be fascinating and relatable considering our current political climate. I made sure to give two prime examples that my audience should be aware of, which were BrExit and the Trump administration unfriendly immigration approaches. Both are examples of nationalistic policies made possible by the people. The purpose of this paper is to find out how this policies are able to gain a mass amount of popularity among its people. It was easy to talk about BrExit and the Trump presidency because these were events that have already happened and we can easily see the effects it had on their country. The challenge came primarily from covering the French election because it was currently happening and not enough information was out in order for me to write a comprehensive paragraph pertaining to my topic. Furthermore, the peer review letters assisted my writing with developing a strong thesis statement and figuring out what was confusing for the readers. I believe peer reviews help in the sense of gaining the perspective of the reader. By doing so, I found my writing to be much stronger than it was before. Another idea that could improve peer review sessions is by having the writer read outloud their paper to their partner, instead of giving each other their paper and have the reviewer read and edit the paper. When I use to tutor, I discovered this method to be much more effective because it engages the writer and reader/ editor to reach to a common goal of understanding what the propose of the essay is. An additional reason why this is an effective way to review a paper, it the the writer is more likely to catch simple grammar errors that could have been missed before. When it comes to large paper, I love using outlines to formulate my paper from start to finish. This made my overwhelming topic achievable because it allowed me organize my thoughts and stay on topic. The Topic Proposal paper also supported my writing by allowing me to work on my thesis statement. By getting feedback and practicing how to write a thesis statement, it helped me in improving my research paper. Afterwards, the Annotated Bibliography was a nice guiding way in finding credible information for my research paper. An obstacle I encountered while doing my Annotated Bibliography was that I couldn’t find updated journals or articles on the DePaul database search engine that related to my topic. I, instead, made sure to pull my information through credible news sources such as BBC New, The Economist, CBS News, etc. Furthermore, my Annotated Bibliography aided me in reading an article and writing about the authors main thesis and how their article could be useful in my research paper. Eventually, it was time to start writing my first research paper
