In today’s society, nativism has become a significant idea; whether the individuals of society can see it or not. Nativism is the idea of protecting a native inhabitant group and their culture. Throughout history, nativism has always affected different communities, cultures, and families and caused chaos, leading to the destruction of each one. Instances such as the abhorrence of Chinese immigration in the late nineteenth century and the African slaves in America throughout the 1700s and 1800s. President Donald J. Trump was recently voted into office for the United States of America. In the past few years, there has been an influx of immigrants, both legal and illegal. For his presidency campaign, Trump vowed to build a wall on the border of America and Mexico in order to protect the country from another influx of immigrants. Nativism is active in this situation because Trump believes that he is protecting the country from cultural and economic failure due to immigration. Trump’s wall is supposed to serve as a shield to America’s cultural well-being and protect the nation from corruption from immigrants. Trump believes that the source of many problems within the country are caused by the influx of immigrants; therefore he wants to build the wall. Trump’s mindset is that if he can deport illegal immigrants and get the legal immigrants under control, he can save the nation and eliminate the risk of losing a cultural battle with those who “threaten” American customs and traditions. Trump is in a situation where he believes that the Americans are the only individuals who should be in the States, when in all reality, it is both the Americans and the immigrants. Nativism has affected Trump’s mind into thinking that all of the immigrants should be deported blocked out, when he should be turning them into legal citizens. Although Trump is only doing what he believes to be the best for his country, it is an extreme form of nativism and affects lives of those throughout the entirety of the United States.
