It is located on the Liberty Island, former Bedloe’s Island, gazing the New York Harbor for more than hundred years. The Statue of Liberty, originally called Liberty Enlightening the World, is a colossal statue granted by France for the one hundredth anniversary of the United States. The construction of the statue was planned by French abolitionist Edouard de Laboulaye who later formed the French-American Union to raise money to construct it. Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi was the one of the main designer who designed the statue. After the completion of the statue, it was divided into 214 pieces and shipped to the United States. On October 28, 1886, the Statue of Liberty officially was completed.

Even though France meant to grant the statue for the friendship, the statue itself should be considered as a symbol of freedom because there are number of designs that represents freedom by becoming independent from the British. For example, the date on the tablet literately means that the American acquired freedom from the British. Furthermore, the statue’s foot stepping forward from the chain also implies freedom from the British government. Argela Trimboli says that “Lady Liberty’s foot is taking that step out of the chains.
