Freedom Even though the colonists did not have a clear understanding of freedom because they were under the rule of a tyrant, the Speech in the Virginia Convention and Crisis #1, written by Patrick Henry and Thomas Paine, both motivated the colonists and congress to aspire and achieve freedom. Thomas Paine and Patrick Henry both used very similar quotes to motivate the colonists into realizing that fighting the British king would grant them freedom at last. No matter how many times the American colonists attempted to resolve things through petitions, remonstrations, and arguments the British were right there, smiling insidiously, but only proved to snare their feet. The colonists were tired of these lies and insults, so this is where Paine and Henry step in.

History/4B 20 September 2016 DBQ #1 WC: Scattered across the timeline of the period that includes the 17th and 18th centuries, the English colonies managed to construct an uncommon government system filled with revolutionary ideas that only pertained to their specific group. They created a unique government that permitted each individual person to have a say in the decisions about the country. The whole general idea of political rights created a well-known status that was unique to America alone.
Liberty or Death “Give me Liberty or give me Death!” It was 1775 the time were colonist were trying to break free from British troops and Government. Colonist steadily paying unfair taxes, on all newspaper and public documents which the British Parliament named the “ Stamp Act”. The colonist feared that they would be overruled and would never get there freedom. The only thing they wanted was to get their rights and a new government.
The American Revolution is arguably the turning point of American history as it resulted in somewhat of a significant, positive change in politics, economics, and society as a whole. However, from 1775 to 1800, the effects of the revolution on the American society were subtle as most principles glorified by revolutionists contradicted the examples set forth by colonial reality. Liberty has the definition of the state of being free within society from oppressive restrictions imposed by authority on one’s way of life, behavior, or political views. This means the right to be free in a country. America had trouble with finding how liberty can be a part of the country. The fight for liberty was difficult to obtain because America had the break from Great Britain, needed to build a country from scratch, and come together as a country. America was not always a free country.
Beginning in the 1790’s, continuing into the 1800’s American politics became a brutal sport. Problems arose between the people as attention shifted from building a new federal government to how powerful that federal government would be. The decision of what America’s government would be and represent was more than urgent. Although American’s government was up in the air, citizens still made their wants for change known. For example, Franklin 's Address on Slavery (November 9, 1789) where he called for an end to slavery and gave ways that the tradition could be dismantled.

Thomas Jefferson, the author of the declaration of independence, was heavily influenced by Locke’s beliefs. Jefferson believed that all men were created equal, which is a liberal view. Introduction: While freedom as a concept feels fairly intuitive, nuances in interpretation can change the basis of an argument. John Locke’s Second Treatise of Government and Alexis de Tocqueville’s Democracy in America do not define liberty in precisely the same way, which in turn guides two different visions in how a government should function. In analysing the "Speech to the Massachusetts General Court," John Winthrop states; " ...to man simply, hath liberty to do what he lists; it is a liberty to do evil as well as to [do] good"( Winthrop 77). In this quote, the reader sees that we are talking about the philosophy of John Locke and Tomas Hobbs. This is essentially the belief that, if men have the liberty of the government, they will revert back to their "nature" which is evil. In this sense, liberty continued in the English colonies as it began in England. The right to liberty roughly followed the incentive of The Glorious Revolution and John Winthrop, created a government of law based on the fear of "nature."
April 19,1775 was when the American revolutionary War happened. Long before the war happened, colonists in North America and British people was enjoying the harmony that the British’s permission for self-ruling, at some level, created the freedom of colonists’ society. Yet these colonies were still be considered as parts of the British empire that they had to obey what the British told them, since it was Britain who settled these colonies in North America, and raised them as raising children. The happy days decayed slowly as the time goes by, more and more conflicts between these two poles had occurred. Since the temporary freedom was given carelessly by Britain, these colonists sure would seize as many opportunities as they can to be independent.
Thomas Paine's Common Sense and The Declaration of Independence both speak against the heinous acts committed by the British and the stripping of natural human rights. Some of these natural rights include life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Both documents advocate the separation from Great Britain. The colonist's belief in the superiority of the republican self-government based on the natural rights of the people found its clearest American expression in Thomas Paine's Common Sense and The Declaration of Independence.
