In paragraph 15 the author states “In the middle of the night, I woke up to the sound of thunder and the feel of rain blowing in through the open window.” This shows us as readers that they were frightened by what was to come of the storm. As
The wind blew heavily, rain pours down, and tree's leaves rustle. Reading these words, the setting is seen to be as a terrible storm occurring. Not only does this description set up the setting, but it also gives the mood to scenario. The mood for this scenario would be gloomy and depressing. Many stories are like this they use a descriptive word or use objects to influence the setting and mood.
“The Storm” In the short story “The Storm” (Chopin, 335) by Kate Chopin, presents a literal occurrence of the storm. It is this storm that keeps Calixta’s husband, Bobinot and his four year old son Bibi from returning home from the store. At home, Calixta was prompted by the stir of storm to gather Bobinot laundry outside. Alcee was also looking to shelter from the storm.
Even though the narrator is nonplussed by all of this, he does admit that there is something different about this storm, and he has never “felt rain quite like it” (3). This peculiar feeling stays with the narrator until he returns to his quarters, changes into dry clothes, and has “eaten all his soup” (30). This singular gustatory image changes the mood of the passage from threatening to comforting. The narrator is safe in his quarters, finally away from the perils of the storm. His prediction is finally affirmed when the news is later brought to him that the storm has calmed down.
“The storm that brought happiness” In the short story “The Storm,” Kate Chopin describes a storm that guides the reader in to a heated sexual affair between past lovers. The story starts when a father name Bobinot and a son Bibi are in a local store when suddenly a somber of clouds filled the sky’s and disabled them from getting home. The mother/wife, Calixta is at home by herself until the storm comes and she invites a man called Alcee who is also the husband of Clarisse in her home. Once the storm starts getting stronger, their connection also grows stronger and they made love. Once the storm ends, the affair ends and Alcee leaves, Bibi and Bobinot return home, and Calixta welcomes them as if she is a new woman.
While the storm is occurring it allows two lovers release many years of tension and that allows for peace after the storm. Chopin utilizes the storm in the beginning and end of the text, making the storm a physical representation of foreshadowing.
The storm is well on its way. “The Storm” by Kate Chopin, is occurring sometime in the 19th century in a small, country town around New Orleans, Louisiana. Calixta and Alcee, the main characters are in for a surprise as an eye-opening storm is soon to come. See, Calixta and Alcee aren’t strangers, it’s just been a while since they’ve seen each other. Roughly around six years ago they had a rendezvous, but both ended up marrying other people.
Themes in “The Storm” Kate Chopin was an American author that wrote many stories that are based in Louisiana. She bases most of her work on women’s movement of the nineteenth century. One of Chopin’s prevalent stories called “The Storm”, focuses on the expectation of women’s marriage in the 1800’s. This story demonstrates numerous significant elements that give the reader a sense of what is going on throughout the story.
Titling the story, “The Storm,” Chopin ties all the different meanings she gave to a storm, together. Right from the start, before even reading the actual story, Chopin sets the mood, as a storm is not a joyful event, but a dangerous or exciting one. Furthermore, the title foreshadows that the mood is tense or exciting. It also offers a hint that the setting will be during a storm. Seeing the title is “The Storm,” gives potential thought for conflict arising.
“Song of the Forests” was written by Dimitri Shostakovich as a performance piece in the summer of 1949. It was written to celebrate the reforestation of the Russian steppes when World War II ended. The piece was well received and Shostakovich earned the Stalin Prize for the piece. The most remarkable feature of the piece are the numerous references to Joseph Stalin as a “great gardener.” Most of the later performances of the piece omitted this reference.
The Storm begins, Bobinot and their son, Bibi, are at the store when a storm approaches. They chose to await the storm's passing by staying in the shelter of the store. At this time, Calixta is at home occupied when the storm arrives. When she goes onto the lawn, she is approached by Alcee, who turns out to be an old lover from her past. There is an instant connection between the two and lustful thoughts begin to emerge.
Use of Setting: Kate Chopin’s “The Storm” The interaction of the characters and the settings in Kate Chopin’s “The Storm” brings out two former lovers and various emotions and desires that have been absent between the two. Chopin will show how crucial the setting is to the characters and serves as a place of action for them as it creates an impeccable environment for an adulterous affair. Through the use of setting, Chopin creates not only a physical storm but a societal storm as well. Chopin uses the situation of the actual storm, the house itself, and the use of colors in order to reveal repressed feelings.

Short stories such as “The Story of an Hour”, “Regret”, “Bayou Folk” and “ A Night in Acadie” symbolizes the true experience of Katherine’s life and the message that she wanted to convey to the society through her writing. In addition, “ The Storm” and “Desiree’s Baby” are the best short stories among others.
Desiree's baby is a short story written by Kate Chopin on November 24, 1892 and was one of the first out of nineteen stories she had written. Desiree's baby takes place in a Louisiana plantation owned by a rich, white man known as Armand Aubigny who inherited his father's plantation called L’Abri. Armand falls in love with a beautiful woman who comes from a family that took her as their own when she was found abandoned by a pillar. They both get married and have a son of their own becoming the perfect family alive. As time passes, the baby begins to grow causing Armand to grow hatred toward both his wife and son.
The female role in today’s society, is drastically different than the female role that took place in the 1800’s. The short story “The Kiss” by Kate Chopin gives an introspective look at a women in that time period deciding between wealth and lust. The two men in the story represent two extreme stereotypes, however their relationship with Nathalie is not quite so typical. How Nathalie interacts with the men in the story, as well as Nathalie’s thought process with each man, hints the reader to notice how Nathalie was a feminist in the beginning stages. Unlike a majority of Chopin 's stories, the main character Nathalie, is a strong willed women that possess no feelings of uncertainty or true mental conflict.
