Jack also engages in fights with his best friend, which at first is truly disheartening and unfair from the reader’s perspective, is later sympathized with the knowledge and understanding that it is Jacks true best shot at gaining the approval of his abusive stepfather Dwight and protecting himself. Jacks life is driven with emotional neglect and constant abuse; Dwight being the largest cause. Jack is desperate to transform himself into the masculine and happy person he wants to be, a deluded image and way of thinking that he believes will solve all his problems and hardships. The boys divide into two major groups as the story goes on. the hunters, led by Jack, and the "civilized" group led by Ralph. Each group strengthens its commitment to its core motives as they come to agree on actions and choices. In the end this mob mentality and groupthink result in hostility and violence between the two groups.

With this conveyance of fear at the animalistic side of himself, Jack proves that he still has some humanity that he will later lose. After Jack says this, he gets in a fight with Ralph over what should be done for the betterment of the tribe.
When Ralph declares Jack the head of hunters, Jack takes this power to another level of jealousy and greed and becomes savage. After he kills his first pig he puts blood on his face and creates a mask. Jack's hunters immediately follow his footsteps creating what appears to be an army with Jack as the general. Having an army eventually leads to having a war which happens towards the end of the book. This represents a futuristic nuclear war which is happening while the boys are stranded on the island.
Later, Tommy convinces Emily to play soccer with him and they talk for a little bit, this helps Emily and Tommy realize that they can be happy and have a good time even though their dad is gone. Tommy finally got back to being the football player that he was before and his team starts to win. Tommy’s team, the Brighton Bears end up making it to the championship game. During the first quarter of the game, Tommy injures himself making a touchdown saving tackle.
