This quote is said by Jack as he is beginning to realize the flaws in his idealism. This is when Jack first arrives in Mason City as a reporter for the Chronicle. He is sent by the editor of the Chronicle, Jim Madison to get information about why Willie Stark is causing such a ruckus with the schoolhouse bid.
