I agree that "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" is a novel of its time as it reflects the values and issues of the time in which it was written. The soul of the time is reflected in Dr. Jekyll, who, while a famous doctor, is unhappy because he must hide his darker self from society as seen in how he eventually separates himself into Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. This suppression of oneself was especially prominent in the socially strict times that the book is set in. Characters like Dr. Jekyll who display these ideas reflect the ideas of the time.
