"A friend is someone who gives you total freedom to be yourself." - Jim Morrison. A friend is someone who, one has a bond of mutual affection. In the novel Uglies by Scott Westerfeld, friendship is not hard to find. In my essay I will describe three important objects that symbolise important things towards Tally. First off I will explain the scars on Tally's and Peris' hands and how that symbolises friendship. I will then go onto explaining the white tiger orchids and how they symbolise the Pretties and how that could get out of hand. Finally I was explain how the technology is effecting Tally and changing a lot of things in their environment.
To Tally, Peris was someone she could always turn to when she felt down, the scar on her hand constantly reminded her of this. The three month difference never seemed to matter to them, but once Peris turned Pretty everything changed “ Losing your best friend sucks, even if it’s only for three months and two days” but Tally still had her scar on her right palm to remember him by. The tiger orchids were a way to show how the Rusties messed with the ecosystem in ways they shouldn’t. “This flower used to be one of the rarest plants in the world, a white tiger orchid. In Rusty days, a single bulb was worth more than a house.” The white tiger orchids used to be a valuable thing, a thing people looked forward to having, this was the same as becoming a pretty until it got overused. The overgrowth of the orchids was bad for the ecosystem. The white tiger orchids symbolise the Pretties as Shay said "See, when everything is the same and pretty, then disaster follows. And that's what's going to happen with the pretty people, too." Meaning that if too many people turned pretty it will soon become unbalanced and this could be bad for the environment as the white tiger orchids
