The Syrian Civil War - and Why Assad is Currently the Best Option

For the past decade, Syria has been engulfed in a brutal civil war, with death tolls reaching almost half a million and causing one of the worst refugee crises since the Second World War, there doesn’t seem to be an end to this bloodshed anytime soon. The conflict is incredibly complex and confusing, with an uncountable amount of rebel groups and militias, each fighting for their own goal. Whether the goal is to establish a “democratic” Saudi puppet state, or a worldwide Caliphate, there is one thing the majority of these groups share in common: they want to overthrow the current president of the country, Bashar Al Assad.

Out of the available options for leading Syria, which is either a band of loosely organized radicals, or a dictator, the dictator is the one that will bring the most stability. If Syria falls into the hands of the insurgents, people of different beliefs will be oppressed and the original goal of democracy will most likely not be achieved.

In conclusion, Assad is currently the best option for the Syrian people. While he isn’t the best leader out there, he is far better than either IS or the rebels, the majority of which are Sunni radicals on par with Al Nusra or IS. Assad’s rule doesn’t oppress Sunnis, Shias or Christians, something that the radicals will probably wouldn’t even bother trying. The interests of the US and other Coalition members do not reflect the interests of the Syrian people, who are the main victims of this tragedy.
