I became insane, with long intervals of horrible sanity.” (Poe, BrainyQuotes) This quote applies to many of the poems and short stories that Edgar Allan Poe writes. One example is “The Tell-Tale Heart” short story. In this story, an old man’s eye aggravates the narrator which leads him to murder the man. Another example of this is the story “The Black Cat”. This is about an aggressive alcoholic that kills his pet cat, which later comes back to haunt him. Killed by the aggressive, alcoholic narrator, the pet cat comes back to haunt him in this story. The poem “The Bells” incorporated this as well. Here, colored bells represent different times in the narrator's existence, and the poem takes a quick turn from light and airy, to miserable and frightening.
