No one ever thought that hunting could go so wrong. The short story “Hunters In The Snow” by Tobias Wolff really makes the reader think and wonder whats going to happen next, as three men wonder into the woods on a cold snowy day for a hunting trip. The author uses the setting and conflict to portray the characters and how they act in the story. The three man Kenny, Frank and Tubs are pretty close to friends, but that does stop Kenny from teasing Tubs the whole trip, Kenny nearly runs him over when he's picking him up. Tubs had to drive out of the way, Kenny laughing up a storm states that he looked like a “Beachball with a hat on”. This is just the start to a disaster of a hunting trip. There voyage being with them trekking into the woods looking for a deer. Nearly two hours went by and they haven't seen a single deer, so they stop at a stream to take a break and eat something. After they ate they continued to follow the steam up, Frank and Kenny took one side while Tubs was on the other. But they didn't see anything so they decided to take Tubs back to the truck. The snowy weather and cold air symbolizes the way the men feel toward each other throughout the story. Like how Kenny shows up an hour late to pick up Tubs and almost runs him over on purpose and laughs about it. Or how Frank always chimes in on Kenny’s rude comments, while Tubs tries to be the considerate one throughout the story until he reaches a breaking point when Kenny shoots the dog. The forest then symbolizes a sense of fear and darkness throughout the story. The snowy forest makes it appear though that the men are going to get lost and stranded in the cold woods, since there snow tracts are being covered up with fresh powder as it gets later during the hunt.
