“Justice for Justyce in Dear Martin” BANG! BANG! The sound of gunshots ringing through Justyce’s ears. These sounds are not just heard by Justyce but it's heard by all the families who have lost their loved ones to gun violence and racism. Dear Martin written by Nic Stone emphazies the real life murders and racism that happen everyday and puts it into a novel. Through the use of various literary devices the author is able to show the challenges the characters go through to fight racism and gun violence. In the beginning of the novel Justyce is racially profiled and is detained for helping out his white friend. From this point onward Justyce’s whole perspective changes. Firstly, there is conflict between Justyce and police officer, There is a conflict at the beginning of the story. Justyce is wrongfully detained for helping out his white girlfriend and tries to explain to the police officer that he was just trying to help her get home since she was drunk. Nothing seems to work and Justyce remains in his handcuffs the whole night. This conflict ulitametly fuels Justyce for the rest of the novel. "I'm not a threat! I'm a student, an honor student, with a bright future ahead of me! Just because I'm black doesn't mean I'm a criminal!" Secondly there is conflict between Justyce and gun violence. Justyce has personal first hand experience of gun violence. While Justyce and his bestfriend Manny are playing their music loudly a man repeatedly asks them to stop. However Manny and Justyce have all the right to continue on playing their music. The man gets fed up and shoots them both. Justyce survives but Manny isn’t as fortunate. This puts Justyce in a very disturbed spot because he has made continuous efforts to stop racism and inequality in his community and when it happens to him he feels as if it is no longer in his hands. Point of view is used exponentially to show how the theme is developed throughout the story. Firstly, Justyce’s point of view is used as a powerful lens to show how gun violence and racism are impacting the world. Throughout the whole story Justyce goes thorugh miserable situations that give the readers a reality check with everything going on. The readers are able to see what goes on in someone's life whether it is their best friend getting killed or they
