The Crucible by: Arthur Miller is a play about the Salem witch trials that happened years ago. The Salem witch trials consisted of lots of deceiving and accusations. Because lying can lead to more lies or sometimes get you out of trouble, does not mean you should continue telling the lies. You should tell the truth even if you get in more trouble. Because of the lies that were told, Danforth goes forth with the hangings of Proctor, Nurse, and Corey. Proctor was telling the truth and eventually got hanged even though he was not okay with lying about seeing the Devil. Abby thought that just because she had the power of being able to accuse people, that she could just accuse anyone and it eventually got to her head and they stopped believing her. Another theme relating to the conflict of John Proctor being hanged is the theme of “lying eventually catches up to you.” When Abby saw that John was getting accused she was angry because the whole reason she was lying was to get to John and try to be with him and Reverend Hale felt bad because he didn’t think that Proctor, Cory or Nurse were witches. Abby then went to the judge of the court and told him that Hale’s wife was a witch. At that moment they realized that Abby was just crazy. Abby knew that they no longer believed her and they felt as if all the other accusations were lies just like the one she was trying to tell them now.
