Imagine you had been captured by Nazi Germans. They threatened to kill you if you didn't follow instructions. In 1997 Hitler took control of the Jews and put all of them in concentration camps. In the book Prisoner B-3087 by Alan Gratz the author uses Character thoughts, character actions, and conflict to show the theme that the fear of the unknown is the drive to persevere through hard times. In one of the first pages, the author sets the scene with the constant fear of being taken away or kicked out of their home. The main character Yanek already wishes for a better life as a Jewish pole hoping that the danger would soon pass over. “I would have laughed more and hugged my parents”(Gratz, pg2) Yanek hopes for the better because he will never know what is to come. This ties into the theme because the Germans keep most of their plans a secret until they execute the plan. The author introduces Yanek’s father as a trustworthy person but because of all of the chaos he has begun to doubt his father. ”And for the first time in my life, I had begun to doubt my father”(Gratz,17) Yanek’s Father is one of the only other people he trusts. Many families like Yanek have been hiding from the Nazis to survive the toll. “I scrambled to the little window in our coop, where we’d hung a blanket to hide us”(Gratz,49) Yanek’s family was scared of the nazis capturing them but they needed some way to make money, or get food. So every few weeks they go to get rations. One week Yanek goes home to see that his parents are gone. Yanek now has very few people to trust like his aunt and uncle.
