Bryce Karnes Comber Independent Study 6 April 2023 Book Report on Prisoner-B3087 Prisoner B-3087 is a novel written by Alan Gratz, it makes you see the perspective of the holocaust through a Jewish boy named Yanek Gruener. The book is primarily historical fiction, but it is based on real-life events and real people. Yanek Gruener, who is the main character of the book, is based on Jack Gruener, who was captured as a teenager and survived six concentration camps throughout World War II and later immigrated to the United States. This book is a good fiction novel for people to be able to learn about the violence, concentration camp life, and the PTSD that holocaust survivors face to this day. Yanek witnesses the awful murders of his family and friends, and lives through the horrors of these concentration camps. Despite the terrible situation he is in, Yanek manages to survive these horrors through his determination and a will to stay alive.This is shown on page In part of the book, Yanek is forced to work all day in a crematorium. S, also related a ton. You can tell that Alan Gratz really took a lot of time to make Yanek’s story resemble the real thing. The part that stood out to me the most was how both the made up character and Mrs. S became so numb to the point that they felt as if it was a game. In the book, Yanek states, “It was all a big joke. I could see that now. There was no rhyme or reason to whether we lived or died. One day it might be the man next to you at roll call who is torn apart by dogs. The next day it might be you who is shot through the head. You could play the game perfectly and still lose, so why bother playing at all?” and in the article Mrs. S told Chodoff that, “Well, it didn’t bother me either. I had no feelings whatsoever. I couldn’t care less at this point of the game. It really didn’t matter.” I just found this very interesting since they both called the camps a
