Family & relationships. Not everyone has them, and not everyone realizes how good they have it. Family can come us all different shapes and sizes. You must develop a relationships with them. Relationships do not happen overnight, they need time and effort. S.E. Hinton is a brilliant writer. She does a great job showing themes and teaching people lessons. The Outsiders is a very sentimental book that shows many themes that mixe into it. Ponyboy realizes that his relationship with certain people is not the best. Ponyboy is almost 100% sure that Darry hates him. Darry had hit him because he got mad that Ponyboy came home late and he was worrying about him. He wants a relationship with Darry, but he feels that Darry does not have feelings. Then Ponyboy experiences something that he never expects. “I realized, horrified that Darry was crying.” he was crying because he cares so much about Ponyboy and is worrying about him. Ponyboy finds it shocking that Darry is crying because he thought that Darry hates him. This shows us that relationships can lay beneath the surface, and they may not always show you how they feel. In conclusion, family and relationships are vital. Over time relationships evolve. Sometimes family is not your blood, it can be friends too. You must give relationships time and effort for them to grow. In the book the characters illustrate what it means to be family, and what you would do for each other.
