"The view from the bridge" is a tragic play which is " a serious play, representing the disastrous downfall of a central character, Aristotle also observed that the protagonist is led into a fatal calamity by an error which takes the form of excessive pride" (baldick,206). The character of Eddie Carbone represents this excessive pride. He is a long shore man in his fifth decade who falls in love with his niece. His love towards Catherine is his tragic flaw "the defect of character that bring about the protagonist downfall in tragedy"(baldick,206). Eddie brought up his niece and fall in love with her. He becomes jealous and angry so he commits terrible guilty that lead to his death. In addition, this play is a kind of a problem play that deals with particular social problem which are the consequences of illegal immigration. Many reasons force Marco and Radolpho to leave Italy, they do not have work, so they do not get money to support their families. Illegal immigration could be seen from two sides ; it has its benefits as immigrants may find work to support their families. On the other hand, its dark side that it leads to home sickness , family disintegration and its most crucial point is that illegal immigrant live in a nightmare. They become afraid of getting catches by the immigration office and departed back to their country.
