“The theory of Communism may be summed up in one sentence: Abolish all private property.” Communism did not start in the 1950s, it can be traced further back in history. Anti-Communism movement can be traced as far back as 1848; when Karl Marx published Communist Manifesto. In the 1930s, people started to see Communism as an appealing theory. Joseph Stalin was admired for his announcement that Communism was allowed to spread around the globe. Some people were attracted to capitalism and others the activism of it. In time, people also worried about Soviet influence in the United States. In 1938, anti- Communist and anti- Fascists in congress , joined together to create House Un-American Activities Community. In 1947, it was issued to start a Federal Loyalty- Security program. This program allowed review boards to fire any employees if they were thought to be disloyal. This also included that teachers and other public employers were required to take a loyalty oath. Meanwhile, libraries had to pull books off shelves that were considered “too lefties”. These books included Robin Hood and The Grapes of Wrath. Screenwriters, actors, directors, etc were blacklisted because of possibly being a communist. “In 1950, fewer than 50,000 Americans out of a total US population of 150 million were members of the Communist Party.” Anti- Communism continues into the 1960s, but after 1954 it lost most of its “fevered pitched”.
