2. Emmett Till was born July 25, 1941 to Louis and Mamie Till. He was a self-assured young man who loved to be the center of attention. In July of 1955, Emmett turned 14 and in August his great uncle, Moses Wright, visited Chicago and invited both Emmett and his cousin Wheeler to visit him down in Mississippi. When Mamie and Emmett hugged on the morning when he went to catch the train to Mississippi, neither of them knew it would be the last time they would see each other while Emmett was alive. 3. On September 2, 1955 Mamie Till received her son’s remains in Chicago from Mississippi. The next day a viewing and funeral services began in Emmett’s honor. On September 6, 1955 Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam were indicted by a grand jury and plead not guilty. Their trial began on September 19, 1955 and no blacks or white women were able to serve on the jury. On September 23, 1955 both Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam were acquitted of Emmett’s murder after only 67 minutes of jury deliberation. The following is a timeline of events between 2012 and 2013. On February 26, 2012 Travyon went to 7-Eleven for a can of ice tea and skittles. As he is walking back to his father’s home, George Zimmerman – a neighborhood watchman – calls 911 to report a suspicious black male. While the 911 operator tell Zimmerman not to follow Trayvon, he continues to pursue him. Travyon and Zimmerman end up in an altercation which ends in Trayvon being shot at close range. 7. On April 11, 2012 George Zimmerman is charged with second degree murder and on April 23 he enters a not guilty plea. On June 3, 2012 Zimmerman surrendered himself to the authorities, on July 6 he was released from jail after he was able to post 10% of his $1 million bond. On June 24, 2013 the trial begins and on July 13 the jury found Zimmerman not guilty. Trayvon Martin’s murder started a new movement entitled Black Lives Matter. 10. Racism has been the cause behind many deaths of young African American males. While there are laws put in place to protect everyone, The Law which includes police officers and Department of Justice do not always protect our young African American men.
