Police brutality has been occurring since the idea of a police officer was first brought up. Officers have found many holes through the law enforcement system. This brings upon many types of misconduct and excessive force. Unfortunately, police officers are not usually held accountable for their brutality. “The Incentive Program, or the method of police chiefs using promises of contraband going to sub-departments that lack the money in the budget, gives officers more incentive to not only plant evidence to make an entire estate contraband, but it also lets them rationalize lining their own pockets” (White).
The work that police officers do is very complex. There are different rules and codes that they are supposed to follow in order to accomplish their job at their organization. Police officers present different behaviors while patrolling and in other areas of policing that creates many confrontations with the society as well inside their departments with co-workers and other people above them. In police departments exits different codes that police officers follow that many times create that police misconduct and police brutality stay under the rug, without been penalized. In the movie Fort Apache the Bronx it portrayed how police corruption, misconduct and unethical behavior were part of their daily work just because they followed certain codes
A department is judged by the one “rotten apple” (Pollock, 2016) an example of this is, if one cop is taking kickbacks, then the whole department is viewed as being corrupt. If the employees do not agree with the unethical decisions of their leaders then they can be addressed through a commission
Police corruption is not something that is frequently talked about, and there are definitely very few films about the subject. One such film is Serpico, which is based off of the life of NYPD Officer Frank Serpico. The movie shows the issues of police corruption, and how the police subculture works to keep it covered. The police subculture is a very complicated and closed thing.
Rampart, a movie released in 2011, was set in Los Angeles in 1999. Dave Brown was an L.A.P.D veteran police officer working for the Rampart Division. Brown is a corrupt police officer, who is racist, violent, and self-centered. Many suspicious events involving Brown happen and the department gets put into a corruption scandal and everyone is pointing the finger at Brown. The first incident of corruption I noticed in the movie was when Officer Brown physically abused a suspect.
In this case the police integrity is questioned inside the walls of Men’s Central Jail in downtown Los Angeles, CA. The ones that does the misconduct are often referred to as the bad apples. Finally, I would like to look at a podcast called Serial. The first season of Serial follows the murder of a high school senior Hae Min Lee in 1999. After searching for six weeks, her body is found buried in the local park. Her ex-boyfriend, Adnan, is arrested and charged with her murder. However, Sarah Koenig, host of Serial, believes there is something fishy about the case from the start.
Although we hope our Police force will use their powers for good, but sometimes police misconduct can occur. Often, the police are under great pressure to act as quick as possible, espcially in a murder case and if the murder victime is white, a child, police officer, or prominent. For example, In the 1990’s the case of Rodney King, that not only shows a racist issue within the criminal justice system, but also the issue with abuse from police officers, but changed the country’s views on the LA police force. Twenty- Seven years ago,Rodney King was brutally beaten by Los Angeles police officers.
Police Corruption Against Minorities Today, law enforcement is against minority groups due to the fact that they get treated worse or just get pulled over for not being white. Since the whites are the dominant group in the United States, they control the laws and criminal justice system. It’s up to us, the minority groups to stand up and say something. Jailing minorities for very minor offenses can cause lots of problems to their family. For example, a parent is jailed for a small possession of illegal drugs, and that parent is the one who is working to pay the bills, the family will certainly struggle to meet their monthly needs.
Ethics and the Evolution of Police Policing in this present day is defined as an individual or group of individual who prevent and detect crime within a community. Policing compares in many ways. They all attempt to provide services, keep the peace and reduce crime. Policing has evolved into something much more than what it used to be. Police misconduct can be described as any inappropriate behavior on the part of any law enforcement officer that is either illegal or immoral or both.
I have struggled with thoughts and fears of death for 30 years, but I also understand and accept the fact that “dying is an escapable part of life” (Quadagno, 2014, p. 299). However, this understanding and acceptance does little to ease my fears about dying. In reality, I do not fear death or dying as a process rather my fear is what awaits me on the other side. There are two correlating components associated with this fear, first is religion, which is followed by my sexual orientation. Having grown up in a Christian and church-going family, I understood homosexuality was a sin long before even knowing I was gay.
On the other hand, there is that amount of people who believe if the victims really did do something so terribly wrong, they deserve the punishment they receive. This can be a very touchy subject to talk about since there are so many viewpoints on police brutality and corruption, but there are some officers who are getting away with abusing their power. Police corruption can be used in many different ways, but the most common ways are where the police either abuse their contracts as officers to gain power for themselves in the department or for personal gain, like bribery or officers using the evidence taken for themselves. Extortion is also a problem in the system where officers use their power to threaten someone in order to get ownership of property or money.
