Police corruption has been the largest ongoing problem in the United States criminal justice system. In the documentary, “The Seven Five” directed by Tiller Russell, he sheds light onto the story of former NYPD officer Michael Dowd and how he and his prescient were involved in committing numerous crimes, including running their own cocaine ring while on the job in the 1980’s, early 90’s. The examples of police misconduct during the documentary were dishonesty, abuse of power, and police brutality. Dishonesty was a consistent topic throughout the duration of the documentary due to the double-life Michael was living. While serving his country as a police officer, Michael was in control of a cocaine ring. He used his uniform and his partner, to play vital roles in his quest for wealth. Michael was ultimately dishonest to everyone he encountered due to the double-life he was living. The abuse of authority came into play as soon as he started receiving bribes and looking in the other direction of crime that was occurring. The “hidden honor code” among police officers’ ties hand in hand with abuse of power, because they have each other’s back even if an individual officer is not doing their job correctly. During the documentary, he kept reciting how many times he would avoid issuing tickets in exchange for money, he estimated hundreds of occasions.
