Also as mentioned Sacco and Vanzetti were anarchists, which means they did not see the necessity in government. At the time there was a government crackdown on radicals which brought out the “Red Scare,” which is the fear of communism spreading in the working class. Just two days before Sacco and Vanzetti were arrested they were put on a watchlist by the government for fear that they might be radicals as well. In addition, as another result of all the immigration at the time and the ending of the war, the U.S. had a strong feeling of nativism. Even throughout history americans always expressed hostility to immigrants that threaten the “American way of life.”
Douglas O. Linder, professor and historian of University of Missouri mentions,” Sacco and Vanzetti were two innocent victims, who were used to send a political and economic message to the rising tide of anarchist
I have given you my soul; leave me my name!”. Arthur Miller and John Proctor were both accused and neither turned in their colleagues or neighbors “Beguile me not! I blacken all of them when this is nailed to the church the very day they hang for silence!” . Both Miller and Proctor were offered bribes for their innocence, they chose to pay their lives to go against the church even when innocent. The Salem witch trials and the accusation of communism were both out of pure fear and hysterical attributes.
McCarthyism Echo’s The Crucible “For to be free is not merely to cast off ones chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.” (Nelson Mandela) Freedom and liberty were things that were not honored in both The Crucible and McCarthyism. The Crucible is a 1953 play by Arthur Miller. It is a fictionalized story of the Salem Witch Trials. It took place in the Massachusetts Bay colony during the year of 1692, which was about a group of young girls in the Salem village who claimed to have seen others with the devil, and accused several innocent women of witchcraft.
San Piedro is an island containing about 5,000 people. Fishing and strawberry fields are the main sources of income for the residents. Citizens’ houses are close together, and Amity Harbor is the island’s only town. The island has huge green hills and many fields that are filled with alfalfa, feed corn, and strawberries. During the winter, which is the time of the trial, Amity Harbor can become covered in sheets of snow.
Background Albert Henry Desalvo was a serial rapist and killer in Boston, Massachusetts. He was born on September 3rd, 1931 Chelsea, Massachusetts. His childhood was unstable as his alcoholic father, Frank DeSalvo, was physically abusive towards his wife, Charlotte DeSalvo, and his six children. His father would openly bring prostitutes home and engage with them in front of the family, he taught Albert how to shoplift and break an entry at the age of five, and he forced Albert to initiate sexually at the age of seven, all while watching Albert’s mother being brutally abused (Catching The Boston Strangler: Albert DeSalvo (Born To Kill), Our Life).
And died.” (Doc F) In doing this both men had consequences, some worse than others, and instead of lying and saying the names of people that truly didn’t do anything they refused to in a sense testify. All of these points both relate to McCarthyism and The Crucible. People became selfish and only saw their benefit, neither had evidence to prove anything that they were saying, and people say what effect it was having and started to figure out what was going on so they refused to testify and accepted the consequences.
People were so full of fear that they would do anything to eliminate their anxiety. The McCarthy hearings of the 1950s reenacted the hysteria of the Salem witch trials of 1692 by spreading mass fear of prosecution, creating false accusations, and blacklisting people. The Salem witch trials were considered to be America 's most notorious episode of witchcraft hysteria. Many innocent people were killed as a result of false accusations, and many other women were put through trials to determine if they were witches.
As time has passed, throughout history, during different periods of time there are parallels. There are three eras that we are focussed on, where there are three types of people during each era. The three different eras that we’re focusing on, are The Salem Witch Trials (1600s), The McCarthy Era (1950s), and Today (2000s); the three types of people are the people who are the reasons why there’s accusations towards the accused, the accused, and finally the accusers. In The Crucible, or during the Salem Witch Trials, the person that’s the reason why characters were accused is John Proctor. The accuser in the play, who decides to point fingers at everyone, is Abigail Williams.
Not for an actual crime.” And so the two men became martyrs for their cause. As said by (Moshik Temkin)(2007)(p.8) Sacco and Vanzetti became reincarnations of the radical abolitionist John Brown or even of Jesus Christ. This trial and legal debate sparked much debate and resentment in the people. (Moshik Temkin)(2007)(p.8) “No other event until the vietnam was evoked as much anti-American sentiment among non-Americans who had previously held favorable views of the U.S. and its legal system.”
English 348 Mid-Term Exam: Domesticity and the Gothic in Jane Eyre and Bleak House In Brontë’s novel, dreams and uncanny doubles reflect Jane’s frustration with her imprisonment as well as her subconscious feminist desires. Dickens, by applying traditional Gothic concepts to both modern and domestic settings, paints a scathing picture of the disorder, hypocrisy, and indifference of Victorian England. These works acknowledge that very real threats exist within seemingly secure settings, and use Gothic elements to both reinforce and challenge the validity of the moral attitudes and behaviors illustrated within them. It is ultimately suggested that a balance between emotion and logic is necessary to gain the most accurate version of the truth,
