Ugliest. Prettiest. Lots of students have been labeled as one of these. In the book The List by Siobhan Vivian, the week before homecoming, two girls from each grade are picked. One named the ugliest, and one the prettiest. The girls who are picked get instant attention, good or bad. Danielle Demarco, Abby Warner, Candace Kincaid, Lauren Finn, Sarah Singer, Bridget Honeycutt, Jennifer Briggs, and Margo Gable’s lives are about to change at the high school, for better or for worse. What becomes apparent throughout the book is that people should always be careful about what is said about another person, it always has an affect on them. After being named as the the ugliest freshman at Mount Washington High School, all her peers don’t seem to be careful about what they say about her, and it’s really affecting her. She started to see all the flaws that she hadn’t noticed before, “To her, it suddenly looks like Danielle is wearing a bad wig.” (pg. 23) Frizzy, dull hair, happens to be one of them. Under her name on the list is “Dan the Man,” and all the people she passes in the hallway call her that. Jennifer was the first to be picked the ugliest girl in her grade 4 years in a row, but it’s not really an accomplishment to be bragging about. Jennifer’s freshman year, she got so upset she threw up on herself while crying, “..she wailed so loud the science classes could hear her, even with their doors shut and their teachers lecturing.” (pg. 62) Although she was affected less and less every year, it’s not something someone should get used to. When she was crowned with the title her freshman year, it affected her greatly. Others need to watch what they say about people, because what they said about Jennifer had made an impact on her whole high school
