The readers have to continue reading the whole story to understand the authors target audience. This makes the beginning of the story misleading to the target audience. The overall purpose of Cullington story is to persuade and inform the audience that texting does not affect writing. She believes students do have a texting language, but they know when not to use it.
In the first draft the author jumps right to the thesis statement and the publisher’s purpose. He does not have a clear introduction because it was missing an attention getter. The author started talking what the essay was going to be about, and for me it was just like the author didn’t want to spend more time working on the introduction. The author had some problems with sentence structure, moreover, I think that the author wanted to be more specific about what he/ she was talking about that sometimes he/she confused himself.

In the first chapter of They Say, I Say: Moves That Matter in Academic Writing, by Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein, the authors explain that to make the writer’s thesis more understandable, it is necessary for a writer to provide views about their point. The authors state that in order “to keep an audience engaged, a writer needs to explain what he or she is responding to… early in the discussion” (20). Graff and Birkenstein provide templates to introduce other views in ways such as as: opening with an anecdote, presenting views as the writer’s own, and opening with a debate. The authors end the chapter by explaining “return sentences”, which can be used to maintain a text’s purpose and remind readers of the ideas that are being responded to.
Writers use strategies in personal essays to make a connection to readers. Even though readers aren’t necessarily right next to the writer, writers write their personal essays as if the reader were there. They are able to reveal their deepest thoughts within their writing, as readers can relate to it. Phillip Lopate states the importance of strategies in his anthology, “The Art of the Personal Essay.” In his anthology, Lopate mentions that the use of strategies used in personal essays are similar; however, those strategies can portray different themes that the author doesn’t state.

The writer’s voice is the individual writing style of an author, a combinatoin of their common usage of syntax, diction, punctuation, character development, dialogue, etc.., within a given body of text. Distinguished professor of English at Pennslyvania State University, Keith Gilyard explains his first life lessons in his developed essay, First Lessons. He uses phrases like, “I hit the scene uptown in 1952, They doin’ nasty, and I decided to give Judy a sex change operation.” that adds spice to the essay other than just plain out stating what he meant in these phrases.
In Chapter One of Thomas Cooley’s The Norton Sampler: Short Essays for Composition, the audience was exposed to several strategies recommended for reading pieces of literature. These strategies were divided into three segments: Previewing the Text, Reading Closely and Critically, and Responding to What You Read. Each segment contained a list of either advice or questions the reader could heed to while analyzing their given text. Later, the chapter exposed the audience to the four traditional types of writing utilized.
In contrast to that, various examples have legitimized the use of first-person pronouns in English academic writing. Also, second person pronouns remarkably demonstrate the presence of informality in any given piece of academic writing. The second person pronouns create much of a conversation than the unintended academic writing (Biber et al. 32).this is ideally because it evokes interactional skills. In some cases, writers may use the second person pronoun with a semantic reference that is wider, concerning people in general.
