Richard Chase was given the name “The Vampire of Sacramento” during his killing spree in California. Chase put fear into the United States with his gruesome killings and unusual behavior. Some of this behavior included drinking his victim’s blood, killing animals, and injecting rabbit blood into his body. Schizophrenia played a large part in his motive for the killing. It created hallucinations and delusions making him believe he need to ingest human blood to stop his own from turning to dust. His disturbing obsession with blood and unpredictable behavior made him one of the most notable serial killers in United States history.

He determined it would be a tall male, a loner, physically unclean, and who continues to kill (Blanco, n.d.). It took only five days for them to get a lead on a suspect. Chase refused to speak to them when confronted at his apartment. Detectives Then waited for Chase to leave then arrested him as he was carrying out a bloodstained box. Inside the box was the weapon he used in the murders as well as bloodstained wallpaper. Chase tried to claim that the blood and gun were from killing dogs. Upon the search of Chase, they found Dan Meredith’s wallet, further connecting him to the crimes.
When searching Chase’s apartment, everything was soaked in blood. From floor to ceiling. Even his eating and drinking utensils. A blender was on the counter that was covered in coagulated blood and rotting pieces of internal organs (Blanco, n.d.). This blender was used to make his smoothies. The refrigerator was full of evidence connecting Chase to the murders. Federal law prohibits anyone with a mental illness from purchasing a firearm. Otherwise, I would say a law like that needs to be put in place. Chase showed that he can kill without firearms which is a concern. He was in a mental institution for some time and on medication. How he was cleared and able to be released is unknown. Psychologists in these facilities should have a strong understanding that medications may help at the moment but keeping someone on them once released is difficult. Chase quit taking medications after he left causing his symptoms to come back.
Ultimately, preventing serial killers requires a collaborative approach that involves not only law enforcement and lawmakers, but also social workers, community members, and mental health professionals. These groups need to come together to identify potential serial killers by addressing the factors that contribute to violent behavior.
