What acts could an obsession with Satanism provoke a man to commit? Considering Richard Ramirez’s past of drug abuse, his views on reality and the world were twisted. Consumed by the sense of freedom and power that Satanism provided, he believed Satan would protect him from the consequences of his actions. With little schooling completed, Richard would come to realize that he didn’t have many options besides enlisting in the military. Lacking the self-discipline and readiness to conform to authority, he left Texas at 22 and found a home on the West Coast. Richard Ramirez would begin a life of crime that would lead to murder.
Richard Ramirez did not start out as a killer, his first crime committed was a simple burglary and theft. But, on April 10, 1984, Ramirez would see nine-year-old Mei Leung in their apartment building searching for a lost item. Vincow was asleep in her Los Angeles home on the night of June 28, 1984, when Ramirez would sneak through her window, she’d left open. Ramirez then found Vincow and repeatedly stabbed her before slicing her throat. Throughout most of the attack, Vincow had been screaming, yet not even one of her neighbors would call the police. After cleaning up some of the blood splatter from the attack, Ramirez would ransack the house and steal what he thought was valuable. Vincows body wouldn’t be found until later that day when her son came to visit, but there was no sign or trace of who her killer was. After taking a nine-month break from killing, Ramirez would strike again, favoring a .22 caliber handgun over a knife like during the first murders. At the end of his run, Ramirez killed 13 people, and had sexually assaulted 11
