The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a children's picture book illustrated and written by Eric Carle, first published by the World Publishing Company in 1969, and and subsequently published by Penguin Putnam.
This book is an example of early childhood comprehensive curriculum because of it uses familiar children’s literature to provide a solid educational foundation of the basic skills necessary for children to be successful and learners will are introduced into the learning process of reading.. Therefore, this book is recommended to read with children from the age of four or five.
Over the text, the author uses rhyme and repetition as the foundational approach to teaching, making this curriculum appropriate for all young children.

The rhyme it could be seen in much of the words that appear on the book. For example in the first page the author rhymes “sun”, “came up”, “pop”. In the next pages words such as “look”, “food”, “day”, “Sunday” are the ones that contain phonetically regular words.
This book follows the story of a caterpillar turning into a butterfly. The caterpillar starts off as a little egg, but soon hatches and, over the course of a week, goes on a journey eating a variety of different fruits and foods. He grows from a tiny caterpillar to a big and fat caterpillar. He then builds a cocoon around himself and after more than two weeks, emerges as a beautiful butterfly.
