OUR LADY MARY OF ZION: AFRICAN DEPICTIONS OF THE CHRISTIAN MOTHER OF GOD Rachel Heiderscheidt 11 December 2015 ART 311 Riep The Catholic cult of the Virgin has spread its influence throughout the world over the centuries. In this paper, I will compare Marian imagery from three different African cultures: ancient Egypt, Ethiopia, and the Kongo people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo to a typical example of Western Marian iconography in order to explore the ways in which each culture has taken existing icon types and expanded upon them, bringing their own unique cultural identity to the table. In this way, we can see not only the unique stylistic elements of each culture, but the depth of devotion the figure of Mary, and mother
Estrella appears to be a child from a different country who has moved with her family to an English-speaking country. Trying to adapt to her new surroundings, she often finds herself confused. In addition to feeling confused, she also thinks that she is being ignored by those around her every day. However, Estrella does not notice the things others see in regards to her outward appearance. Despite the opinions of outsiders, a man, Perfecto Flores, finally helps her achieve her overall goal.

She did make committed catholic bishops, and that was probably a surprise to others. While she was trying to get the throne she ordered her first execution at the Tower of London. Lady Jane Grey and her husband were the first to be charged with high treason. Mary was on the throne for five years and she was the main reason for so many deaths, and it didn’t solve her problems with religion. All of the people she had executed were English Protestants.

Mary was the Mother of God, meaning she is the human who can lead us the closest to Christ. In chapter 8 of The Enduring Faith & Timeless Truths of Fulton Sheen by Dr. Mark Zia, a devotion to Mary is shown as essential to a relationship with her son. In reverence to this woman, Catholic-Christians give Mary the high form of veneration, called hyperdulia. Against what many Protestant-Christians believe, this is not worship, but respect for the woman who brought Christ into the world. A love of Mary is not only supplemental to worshiping Christ, but necessary.

As stated before, within Catholic Christianity, Jesus Christ is known to be the Son of God. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that, “The name "Jesus" signifies that the very name of God is present in the person of his Son, made man for the universal and definitive redemption from sins” (5). This proves that Jesus Christ is God himself in the form of his Son, who was born to save
