The perfect story is one that has a beginning, middle, and a happy ending. The ending is just as important as the rest of the story because it sums everything up and leaves the reader thinking in a certain type of way. Making the ending happy is the perfect cherry on top of the cake. It gives the reader a sense of satisfaction knowing that everything in the story is A ok. But not all authors choose to end their stories this way.

In “The voice from the wall” a story by Amy Tan, the author doesn’t end the story off with a nice picnic in the park where everyone gets along and has fun, it doesn’t end on a beach, or watching a sunset. Instead, she ends it off with the main character imagining a mother and daughter arguing, then the daughter proceeds to take a sword and cut the mother a thousand times just to “save her”. After cutting her she guides her through “the wall” to see why she was wrong. This is the definition of a sad ending. Doing this makes readers feel sad and unsatisfied. …show more content…

Firstly, it makes you want to read on and see what happens next. This creates the perfect roadway into a second book the author could write. Next, It makes the reader think more about the story. With a happy one it’s done at the end of the story. But, after reading a sad story you think about it more and ask yourself questions. Lastly, it affects them negatively by ruining the story for some. Most people love happy endings but when they are hit with something tragic it really throws them off and ruins the story for them. If the author were to make a second story, they may not want to read it because of the first stories
