Each quote that I mentioned in this paragraph shows the envy Catharine has and with that being said the second quote “I was meant to pick it up. That was what maids were meant to do---pick up their master 's and mistress 's things and put them back in their place (215). This quote is placed immediately after Catharina tries to destroy the painting of Griet by stabbing it with a knife. When Jan Vermeer prevents her from doing this, the knife falls on the floor. Griet knows that she is expected to pick it up.
Since the Holocaust, the United Nations have made sure to let everyone throughout the world have equal rights. This mass killing of Jews violated every right that they had. They were beaten to death, shot on spot, starved, poorly clothed, et cetera. No one deserves the harsh treatment that they got throughout World War II. Nearly six million Jews died during this regime of a Nazi leader named Hitler.
In the short story, “The Rip”, author Robert Drewe uses the idea of Sophie holding a jellyfish “at arms length” to display how she is becoming wary of her father, John, and is keeping him distanced from herself. he reassures her, as if he was trying to reassure himself that their relationship will not become an “anecdote”, but a reality. John is thinking about how he wants to be freed from his emotional turmoil, and how badly he wants to spend this quality time with his daughter and protect her. This “protection” is symbolised by the shark attack (the divorce of John and his wife), and the fear running through everyones minds. This makes the reader feel as if John is putting pressure on himself to make Sophie like him.
The Body Silent, by Robert Murphy, was published in 1987. The story is about Murphy’s personal account of the physical and social changes he underwent after becoming a quadriplegic. Robert Murphy was an anthropologist at Columbia University. In his early career, he spent a year observing indigenous tribes in the Amazon with his wife. In 1972, Murphy experienced a muscle spasm that was later realized to be a symptom of a growing tumor in his spinal column stretching from the C2 vertebra to the T8 vertebra, leading to partial paralysis; he underwent a few surgeries to reduce the size of the tumor, but eventually his paralysis spread until he was fully quadriplegic in 1986.
Survival of the fittest The theme of survival of the fittest is shown throughout the memoir Night. Night was written by Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel. In this memoir Elie explains as well as shows survival of the fittest, by sharing his story of his struggles along with countless other Jews during the holocaust. He illustrated the theme of survival of the fittest in the memoir night through the situations of Elie lying about his age during selection, the Rabbi's son leaving his father, during the death march, and the son killing his father over a crust of bread.
“I Was Sleeping Where the Black Oaks Move” written by Louise Erdrich focuses on a child and a grandfather horrifically observing a flood consuming their entire village and the surrounding trees, obliterating the nests of the herons that had lived there. In the future they remember back to the day when they started cleaning up after the flood, when they notice the herons without their habitat “dancing” in the sky. According to the poet’s biographical context, many of the poems the poet had wrote themselves were a metaphor. There could be many viable explanations and themes to this fascinating poem, and the main literary devices that constitute this poem are imagery, personification, and a metaphor.
Eli’s story started when he was a young very religious teenage boy who was apart of the unfavorable group during the Holocaust, and unlike Eli, Paul was an adult and he was apart of the prefered group during the genocide he experienced. Obviously Eli and Paul didn't have the exact same experiences. because they were apart of two different genocides. Eli went through the Holocaust during World War II as a Jew so he didn't have much if any control at all when it came to loved ones. Paul experienced the genocide in Rwanda, and he was Hutu which was the more favorable group
“Night” is a poem by Hilda Doolittle better known as H.D. Born in Pennsylvania on September 10, 1998. The work of H.D was “characterized by the intense strength of her image economy of language and use of classical mythology”. Mythology is the myths of a group of people depending on each culture. While classical is a long established event or idea or also traditional, HD used traditional myths to create each poem. She was also the leader of the imagist movement which was very important at that time.
There is a sentimental value that is attached to every families’ collection of heirlooms and keepsakes. No matter how long these items remain in storage or are hidden away; their representation always stays the same, they keep people connected to their family roots. Author John Updike’s short story, “The Brown Chest” uses symbolism and imagery and sensory writing to focus on the idea that family memories never fade away and material things can maintain a deeper meaning no matter what they endure. John Updike appeals to the reader’s senses to allow them to connect with what is occurring in the story on a more profound level. He begins the story by writing from the main character’s childhood perspective.
The last consonant in both words are the same and the vowels before are also the same. This is an example of an end rhyme. Also, this example includes an alliteration. “Two-toned”, in Stanza 10, is an example of alliteration.

In Kate Chopin 's novel The Awakening and the short story “The Story of An Hour” feminist beliefs overshadow the value in moral and societal expectations during the turn of the century. Due to Louise Mallard and Edna Pontellier Victorian life style they both see separating from their husband as the beginning of their freedom. Being free from that culture allows them to invest in their personal interest instead of being limited to what 's expected of them. Chopin 's sacrifices her own dignity for the ideal of society’s expectations. Chopin 's sad, mysterious tone seems to support how in their era, there was a significant lack of women 's rights and freedom of expression.
I believe The Waking started the new unit because of the story’s similar themes, imagery, and word choice. The Waking 's theme is about the cycle of life. Near the beginning of the story, Charlie had the mindset of a toddler. He was naive, and confused about the world. In the beginning of The Waking it says, “I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.”
The text I chose from the Capture Pluralism assignment is the poem “Night Journey,” by Theodore Roethke. I chose this poem because when I read it, I gained a lot of Americanness from it along with it being the most enjoyable piece for me. If I was to present this a degree of Americanness I would present it a First degree and there are a couple of reasons for that. First reading this poem I found it kind of hard to find any sort of Americanness in it, but after reading it a couple more times trying to keep in mind what Americanness means to me, I found some ideas and points in the poem.
