The War of The Worlds is set in the late 1800s in a quiet english countryside. Locals in the town never gave a thought to extraterrestrials or Mars, but the inheritance of Mars gave much attention to the planet Earth. Earth is a lively planet fit for colonization, while mars is a dying planet with a depleting atmosphere, making Earth a target for a Martian Invasion. As on one night in a bright flash a cylinder shot from the sky and into the ground, as a crowd gathers; the Martians rise into the sky on gigantic tripods. Immediately, the martians begin to torch the countryside with heat rays.
As the city is in panic, we meet the protagonist; the narrator with no name. A quiet English man with a curious mind, but is thrown into the chaos of the invasion. He runs from the tripods and gets his wife to safety, but then returns to the tripods to investigate. But after seeing the Martians destroy the British army he hides back into his house. London has been devastated by a Martian weapon called “the black smoke’’ a deadly dense gas that can kill a man in an instant. The black smoke settles into the ground and forms a thick layer of ash that makes the land uninhabitable. The survivors of london evacuate to safety. In london the Narrator’s brother sees a robbery of two women. The robber steals their carriage and leaves. He and the two women: Mrs. and Miss Elphinstone board the boat but have no room, until a blind man drops his money and gets trampled by a mob of people. As the ship leaves, a tripod rises out of the water and begins to attack the boat but the british navy destroys the tripod, at this point in the book humanity begins to have hope they can survive the Martian invasion.
