“Books have a unique way of stopping time in a particular moment and saying: Lets not forget this” (Dave Eggers). Cassandra Claire; the author of of this book; makes this apparent using time as something that is key to the plot and elements of the story. this is a fantasy fiction book that takes place in New York City during 2008. This story follows main protagonist: Clarissa Fray as she discovers a new/hidden world inhabited by demons and downworlders. Claire makes it apparent that time is a crucial element to the story. She makes references to the past as it is the “key” for solving the problems and to make predictions to keep the reader involved. First is through a character named, Hodge, who is portrayed as an instructor, although he seemed off from the beginning. This due to the fact that hodge was given a “curse” that he believes others should have revived; but were pardoned due to their status. “Were the Lightwoods not as guilty as I was? Were the Waylands? Yet I was the only one cursed to live out my life without being able so set so much as a foot outdoors,...” (374). Next is the way that she gave clues of a major conflict coming up. This is through the many times that characters claim that a war is coming. “Valentine is back. There will be no accords...:” (276). This is telling how many “downworlders”, (the creatures that are not human), believe that peace cannot be attained. Lastly she uses foreshadow as a tool to move the story along to reach the climax, or the conferentation with main antagonist: Valentine. This really starts to show when Jace, a sort of mentor and love interest to the protagonist, is abducted by Valentine. “Then [Valentine] vanished, taking Jace with him. (371). Taking the boy that clary loved would only lead her to confronting Valentine to retrieve him. All this to give a clue to the reader to guess what will happen after each and every conflict they run
