The novels The Poisonwood Bible and Things Fall Apart consist of many indications that the characters home influences their behavior greatly. The white man has their own perspective and expectations on what a home is and should be. In the African culture they have a very different belief system that influences their decisions. In both novels colonization takes place and has a big impact on what each group thinks of the other. When reading these two works of literature the audience learns about the different perspectives from the different cultures at hand. His tribes gods are manifestations of the earth and seasons and nature. Okonkwo gained his wealth by farming crops his entire life. To the Umuofia clan, respecting the gods that help with weather and rain is highly important since it is how they survive. Without their beliefs they wouldn't take care of their “home” as well as they do and Okonkwo wouldn't have turned into the man the reader sees in this novel. When the white missionaries come to their clan and try and change their belief system Okonkwo is enraged. The home for each character is either personal or religion based. Having the two cultures come together shows the extreme differences in each lifestyle but also the similarities. Nathan and Okonkwo's obsession and fear of being weak and cowardly drive them away from their family and influences their behavior throughout each novel.
