Gloria Steinem once stated, “A woman without a man is like a fish without a bicycle.” This quote is saying that women don’t need men, but the world has made the impression that they do. In the Wife of Bath’s Tale, women desire power over their husbands. In Chaucer’s Wife of Bath’s Tale, in lines 214 and 215, it states, “A woman wants the self-same sovereignty Over her husband as over her lover, And master him; he must not be above her.”
Chaucer’s Portrayal of the Wife of Bath The Wife of Bath presents the reader with a woman who compiles to the stereotypes corresponding with the negative misogyny of women during the medieval times. Wife of Bath is viewed the same as this stereotypical woman. Some can agree with Chaucer’s choice of these negative traits of The Wife of Bath, but the same conclusion is always met. Chaucer chooses to display the Wife of Bath as a misogynistic symbol of negative traits in order to use her as an object of mockery.
There are many inferences about the Wife of Bath throughout this story. With inferences such as the wife doesn't find women trustworthy can be showed with examples from the text. "yet out it must, no secret can we hide" (l.124). In this quote she is explaining a tale of a man trusting a women with a secret and then the women not being able to keep the secret and having to tell it to a body of water.
Alisoun reworks the traditional story of the “Loathly Lady” with a decidedly feminist spin, putting the hag in a position of control and demoting the Knight to a position of submissiveness. Throughout the Tale, the Knight's fate is decided by women, first by Guenevere, then by the crone. Alisoun suggests that a man's true happiness can be realized when he allows his spouse to have some level of autonomy. Although the end of the Tale realigns the positions of power to more traditional gender roles, it is by the woman's own choice finally to be an obedient wife; therefore the Tale provides a milestone for women's quest for self-definition. The rehabilitation of the Knight is surprising, given the Tale's beginning sentiment about the good nature of women in comparison to the base nature of men.
The Knight from the Wife of Bath’s tale was weak and powerless, which is not what one would expect from a knight. In The Canterbury Tales, Chaucer not only has The Knight from the Wife of Bath’s tale, but he also includes another Knight in the prologue. The Knight in the prologue was described as being “a most distinguished man”; He was characterized as “truth[ful], honor[able], generous, and courte[ous]”(46). The Knight from The Wife of Bath’s Tale was the complete opposite;he was weak, powerless and did not uphold integrity. The Knight from the Wife of Bath was so powerless that he went out into the world looking for power, and in order to make himself appear and feel powerful he with his “lusty liver” raped an innocent young girl.
Women during the middle ages faced a lot of oppression from men and were taught to be submissive. Women during this period desired to have sovereignty over men. Most women were told to be respectful and follow men commands that were thrown at them. Women duties were cooking, caring for the house, and providing for their kids. If women wanted to do anything other than care for the household, they would be looked down upon and titled as an unfit mother or wife.
Next, her tale. Her tale starts with a man deflowering a woman
Beowulf and “The Wife of Bath’s Tale” are both narratives in which gender acts as an important theme within their individual communities; both have underlying meanings when it comes to defining what the role men and women in a good community should be. Or in other words, both stories paint a vivid picture of the role of women during the medieval time period, by suggesting that one gender had more power over another. However, these two narratives take alternative paths when expressing their views; Beowulf conveys its message through what is missing, while “The Wife of Bath’s Tale” incorporates satire and uses explicit narrative when telling the experience of a woman that is highly different from other women in her time. Furthermore, another difference that is appealing to the reader’s eyes, besides the way the two narratives reflect to women’s role in medieval times, is that men become the hero in Beowulf, while “the wife”, so a woman, becomes the authority figure in the story of “The Wife of Bath’s Tale.” I want to first introduce the two main differences between the two narratives and then I will explain how regardless of the differences, both of these narratives’ main goal is to show that women had less power and a good community back that time was male dominated.
The women in Othello and Chaucer's Wife of Bath differ, but in the end both want their husbands to love them. In Othello there are only three women displayed in the story, but the statements that were said about these three women were the belief that all women in that society were all the same- evil, whores who were temptress to the men. The three women; Desdemona, the wife of Othello, Emilia, the wife of Iago, and Bianca, perceived as a prostitute who is a “customer” (l. 138. 4.1) of Cassio. Iago is one of the main characters who degrades and slanders all women including his wife Emilia.
Gender role refers to those behaviors and attitudes that are considered to belong to one sex. Gender role is based on femininity and masculinity that differentiate women and men by giving men some roles and women which results to gender inequality. There some work in society that is regarded to belong to women such as cooking, taking care of children and other less important roles while men are given roles that makes them superior than women. Most of the gender roles associated with women makes them inferior and creates a room to be oppressed. Gender roles are constructed by society and attributed to women or men.
On the other hand, in the tale she tells a story about a Knight who takes the maidenhood of a young girl which almost causes him to lose his life and about women gaining sovereignty. The Wife of Bath fifth husband, King Arthur, the Knight, and the Wife of Bath will be placed in Dante’s hell in the Inferno. The
He is given another chance at life by the queen, and his life is secured from the knowledge he received from the woman sitting on the green. Without the women in the story, he would be dead. “Had not the queen and many another lady importuned the king so long for mercy that in the end he granted him his life and gave him to the queen to dispose of” (172). During the first class discussion of the Canterbury Tales, there seemed to be some unsureness about whether the story was about female independence. Some believed that because the old hag turned into a beautiful woman at the end, consequently rewarding the rapist, that there was an ulterior motive.
The Canterbury Tales, written by Geoffrey Chaucer during the medieval ages, is a selection of tales of twenty-eight pilgrims. All of the pilgrims participate in an activity in which each person tells a story. The two tales that this analysis focuses on are “The Miller’s Tale” and “The Wife of Bath’s Tale.” In “The Miller’s Tale,” the story revolves around three men, an old carpenter named John, an astrology student, Nicholas, and a young parish clerk, Absalom. All three men are infatuated with a beautiful 18 year old woman, Alisoun, who happens to be the carpenter’s wife.

The Wife of Bath: An Analysis of Her Life and Her Tale The Wife of Bath’s Prologue stays consistent with the facts that experience is better than the societal norms, specifically those instilled by the church leadership. Chaucer uses the Wife of Bath to display the insanity of the church, but through switching and amplifying their view of men and chastity onto the opposite gender. The church doctrine at the time held celibacy in an idolized manner, forgetting the inability for humans to ever reach perfection, or live up to this standard. They also did not hold women in a high regard at all, again this is where Chaucer flips the role, as the Wife of Bath describes her five marriages in her prologue, essentially describing each as a conquest, where the result is her having all control.
