Contrary to some misinformed bloggers on the internet the word proctor does not share its roots with proctology. The word “proctor” is a contracted form of “procurator” dating back to the 13th and 14th century. In the 13th century directly from latin the word, “procurator” was used for “manager, overseer, agent or deputy”(Douglas Harper, 2016) This makes some sense, in the U.K. the deputy that roams the halls and maintains order and discipline is called a proctor.
