As discussed, it is still unsure whether the word religion means “to hold together” or “to rehearse, to execute painstakingly.” Despite the discrepancies within the meaning of the word religion, it’s important to note that the text highlighted the idea that it ultimately becomes a group phenomenon. Although a lot of religions were founded by an individual, religion as a societal structure culminates into a group of people that are connected in their beliefs and practices. At the same time, it is individualistic in its function in that these people function separately in their beliefs but communicate and interact, making them a group of people that share common goals (which is also a characteristic of a group). Whether or not this set of practice includes prayer, vigils, or liturgical worship, each religion has this. Religion also comes hand in hand with moral prescription – meaning each religion has their own ideals, values, and behaviors that are encourage or discouraged. Lastly, it involves the sacred, meaning that there are certain actions/locations that are taken/visited because they are sacred and considered holy to said religion. Magic, on the other hand, is much less concrete. Magic is driven the concept of mana, which is an elemental force and primary energy. Mana exists everywhere, in everything that surrounds us and is idle until it is somehow activated by something that “unlocks” its properties, or energy. Mana, which once unlocked is ever-present, is what is believed to be manipulated by magic. Magic seeks to alter/influence mana, which is the energy that can change things and is unpredictable.
