In many ways the World State in the dystopian novel Brave New World by Aldous Huxley is extraneous to our society of the modern day. However, there are many similar aspects between our two worlds such as drug use, discrimination, feminism, education, and even technological advances. The irony is in the way we view the World State. Certain ideas of this society seem completely absurd; yet the comparison of our society and the World State are in reach of each other. The ideas within the World State revolve around the philosophies of “Community, Identity, Stability.” Everyone is divided into different social castes much like us. Stability according to this society is changing little and giving no person thought. To achieve this stability, the society distributes free doses of the miracle drug called soma. Soma is highly encouraged because its puts the user into a deep numbness, void of all feeling. Whenever a person is feeling emotional, he takes a dose to rid himself of them. Most of the people took the tablets of soma when they were alone or had a moment of free time cancelling out any possible thoughts. In modern day, our society has begun to legalize marijuana. Marijuana is like soma in the sense they both are stress free drugs and entrance the user into a much “happier” state of mind. Often, both drugs will out the user into a deep relaxation. In the novel, the controller or leader of the World State had said “- there is always soma, delicious soma, half a gramme for a half-holiday, a gramme for a week-end, two grammes for a trip to the gorgeous East, three for a dark eternity on the moon -" (Huxley). The users of soma took the drug as if they needed it to survive. They thought of it as a never-ending holiday. Marijuana is not that far off from soma and now that is being legalized there is a very high chance of people using it for the wrong
