“[T]hat is the secret of happiness and virtue-liking what you’ve got to do. All conditioning aims at that: making people like their unescapable social destiny,” spoke the Director (Huxley 87). In this society, people's life quality is low but their personal satisfaction is high. They are conditioned by Word Controllers to always feel happy and have every one of their desires met without any choice or freedom. In the novel, Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, the effort to sacrifice people's happiness prevents them from exposure to the truth, real emotions, and deep thoughts.

The controller states, “But truth’s a menace, science is a public danger” (233). Because science can lead to expanded knowledge and more freedom, it has to be carefully limited so it doesn't disrupt the structure of the World State. If the structure of the World State is disrupted then the whole society will fall apart. To keep the society a an even balance, it comes at a great cost. Mustapha tries to explain to John how soma solves humanities problems, “Anybody can be virtuous now. You can carry at least half your morality about in a bottle. Christianity without tears—that’s what soma is” (233). Religion is another thing that society has to suffer from to create happiness. When people suffer, there is no need for religion or a God to go to in order to relieve the pain they are in. That’s what soma is for. Soma keeps the citizens of the society in “normality” so that they can continue on with their day and duties they are meant to do. Without religion, science, and history, people have nothing to compare their current situation to previous events and can continue being happy. People are now more willing to accept their current stance because they don't know any differently. With that conditioning, the people of the world state can continue forward with their only known lives and do what they are told without any idea of
