“Sex sells,” has been used as an excuse to exploit men and women through advertising for years. Since “sex sells,” is a common phrase that turns out to be very truthful, in Aldous Huxley’s novel Brave New World, similarly, “sex sells,” is the heart of the World State’s control. Huxley uses sex to convey his theme that if used correctly an individual can instinctively control people. As one reads Brave New World, the reader will see two worlds, which has distinctive differences in the act of sex and morals. In Brave New World the act of sex symbolizes how dehumanized the World State’s citizens are. When the Assistant Predestinator addresses Henry Foster, saying, “ ‘Going to the Feelies this evening, Henry? … I hear the new one at the Alhambra is first-rate. Although the citizens of the “World State” are genetically engineered to have predestined lives, the World State’s government still created a sex drug to control their population. This drug is called soma, which is an instant self-gratification drug that results in the loss of all genuine human emotions. As the Assistant Predestinator calls soma “the perfect drug,” he also implies that it has, “ ‘all the advantages of Christianity and alcohol; none of their defects.’ ” In addition to citing that “ ‘stability was practically assured (54).’ ” Through the characters’ conversation soma is typically offered as treatment towards unpleasant emotions that leads to inefficiency and conflict. Since soma symbolizes the loss of self-control and conformity due to sexual performances, this gives further evidence that the “World State” realizes intercourse as a powerful tool in controlling their citizens.
