The Yellow Wallpaper

In the 1890’s, the behaviors of men and women were quite different than they are today. Men had the tendency to work and provide for the family, while women were meant to take care of their family and house. In today’s society, this still stands true for some, but most women also work and provide an income. Although after reading “The Yellow Wallpaper”, in this case the roles have combined. Jane has an illness and this has caused her to not be able to work or provide for the household.
John is an outstanding physician and husband. Jane states, “perhaps that is one reason that I do not get well faster.” (655). John is a man who is practical to the extreme. He has many major characteristics that show in different ways through the story. He is very intelligent and bright minded. He seems to only believe that his opinion is the only opinion that matters. For example, Jane said, “I believe that congenial work, with excitement and change, would do me good. (656). John does not feel the same way. John cares for and loves Jane, but he only understands her as a person from the outside. Personally, the phrase that I would use to describe him is “control freak”. Jane suffers from a mental disease and major depression. John wants to oversee Jane’s every move because he seems to think that he knows what is best for her. He chooses where she sleeps, what time she eats, and what she does. He does not allow her to work. He does not allow her to write, which is one of her biggest passions. Not a day goes by that he does not belittle her thoughts and concerns in some kind of way. Jane says “I do not like our room a bit. I wanted one downstairs… with roses all over the window... but John would not hear of it.”
