The novel Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston is a psychological fiction. It was Narrated in third person by Janie Crawford, although structured to be janie telling the story to her friend Pheoby. During this time Janie's Grandmother was a slave in the south, to her, being wealthy and not having to work was a sign of happiness and because of that she believed that that was the perfect life for Janie. The story is taken place in 1928, Janie Crawford, a black women living in southern Florida returns home in eatonville after being away for about a year. All the townspeople are wondering why she came back and why she’s wearing what she has on and they’re all wondering why she has come home without her young husband Tea cake. Janie's best friend Pheoby questioning why she came back as well decides to talk to her. Janie tells her the whole story from when janie was a child to the present so that Phoebe can tell the townspeople. Janie explains how she finds a man named Johnny Taylor and gets to know him, not really thinking about his background information or anything. Janie’s grandmother sees this entire scenario differently. She wants Janie to be settled down with a man so Janie's grandmother forces Janie to marry a man named Logan Killicks who is a lot older than her so she can have a good future. Jane then finds a man named Joe starks. She then realized that they both want different things in their lives. Joe starks then ends up dying and Janie starts to live for herself for awhile. A couple months later Janie then finally meets the man who is perfect for her, Tea cake. He takes care of her and wants nothing but the best for her. Once she lost Tea cake, she becomes independent and decides to go back
