An appropriate thematic topic for a group of 8-year-old children is planting corn. I chose this topic because it is now the season for planting corn in my community and 8-year-olds are showing interest in learning how to plant and harvest food crops. Furthermore, there are harvest celebrations within the community at this point; students are also carrying corn cooked via various methods to school. Introducing the topic at this time will definitely capture the students’ attention. This theme is age-appropriate for a variety of reasons. Firstly, the children are already interested in the topic and have some prior knowledge on it; they can identify corn seeds and corn plants. It is also the age group where children should be familiar with how plants grow. Secondly, it involves safe activities in which they can participate. These activities include digging holes with hand shovels, placing the corn seeds into the dirt, and covering the holes with the shovels or their hands. Thirdly, planting and harvesting corn is achievable for students of this age. Students have the opportunity to meet with farmers and speak to them about how they plant and harvest corn. They can be taken to a vegetable or farmer’s market to view an assortment of corn or to a store that sells corn seeds. They can read fact or fiction books about corn. Additionally, each child is allowed to monitor the corn’s growth day by day and record its’ progress in their journals. These different activities give each child a chance to learn something new about corn, regardless of their learning abilities or the ways in which they assimilate
