The Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst expresses the theme that we must learn to see people as they actually are, rather than as we would wish them to be. This means that we should push someone to be what they aren’t. People should be who they are no matter who doesn’t like it. The theme is shown when the narrator was running away from Doodle when it started to storm. At this point the narrator says “The knowledge that Doodle’s and my plans had come to naught was bitter, and that streak of cruelty within me awakened.” This internal conflict represents the theme by saying that the narrator pushed Doodle to hard and is realizing that he was ashamed of himself and his pride means that he was pushing Doodle to be someone he was not.
