Theme Of Betrayal In The Kite Runner

1280 Words6 Pages
One of the few themes that Khaled Hosseini expresses in his novel The Kite Runner is betrayal. Betrayal is defined as misleading/deceiving someone’s trust. This is clearly being demonstrated by Amir, Baba, and other people in society. In the novel, the main character Amir betrayed his friend Hassan by watching him get raped then turned his back on him and ran. According to the text, Amir stated to the readers, “I stopped watching, turned away from the alley…I had one last choice to make a decision…In the end, I ran.” (Hosseini, 67-68). Amir had 2 choices, he could of stand up and saved Hassan or he could run and act like he didn’t see anything. He chose to run like a coward. He betrayed his friend who would do anything for him and protect him. Another act of betrayal in the novel is when Sanaubar left Hassan and Ali. Sanaubar had a duty of being a mother to Hassan and a wife to Ali. She not only betrayed Ali by committing adultery, but also leaving Hassan without so much as holding him because of his cleft lip. According to the text,” Sanaubar had taken one glance…barked a bitter laughter…she had refused to even hold Hassan, and just five days later, she was gone.” (Hosseini, 9). Her actions had left Hassan without a mother figure. In reality, Hassan’s cleft lip was karma for her committing adultery with someone outside her marriage. This caused Hassan to look up to Amir, who was always jealous of Baba’s attention to Hassan. Another act of betrayal in the novel is on pages
