Shown in “Avery’s Gift”, is when she has to give her teacher, Mrs.Vadakin, a gift for her retirement party, so she gets help from her dad to make it. Similarly in “Chicken of the Sea Is So Wacky-Of Course It Was Created by Kids'' Ellison publishes a book with his favorite author, Thi Bui-Stafford by getting help from his dad to branch out to the author and receives help from Hien to illustrate. Both texts follow the theme of receiving assistance and support from their parents and having an influence on their kids’ goals/dreams. In “Avery’s Gift”, her father helps Avery arrange a meaningful retirement gift for her teacher by helping her compose a song that he “wrote out the notes.” (Balaban, 9). Another example is in “Chicken of the Sea Is So Wacky-Of Course It Was Created by Kids” when Hien’s mom helps him illustrate his book like “the background or a character's posture (Balaban, 4). This helps demonstrate how Avery and Hien Bui are assisted by their parents to achieve their goals. Also, the passages of both texts are quite similar due to their parents' faith and belief in their children. As in Avery's Gift”, her father was the one “who convinced her to try” composing a song (Balaban, 8).
