Mason Spisak English 1 1-18-16 Final Essay Damn few is a nonfiction story about Rorke Denver, the main character, becoming a Navy SEAL and what it was like when he was on the job in his 13 years of active service in the middle east. Rorke wants you to learn about his training and how you need to have a strong mental attitude to complete it. Rorke wants you to know about his missions and how you need to be selfless and be willing to do anything for your platoon mates. Finally, Rorke also wants you to know about the values that SEALs live by. Rorke’s training for becoming a SEAL is described as complete agony and borderline torture and only someone mass amounts of mental strength could get through this training. On one of these missions, his platoon was tasked with infiltrating and removing several weapons from heavily armed insurgents. On their raid, their platoon mate, Mikey, was taking point or was in the front of the entry of the team considered the most dangerous position and he was doing it willingly. Mikey is portrayed as a brave soldier willing to do anything for his platoon, for example, Mikey’s first two weeks in Iraq he had already saved the lives of two Navy SEALs. He rushed out into the live fire and dragged them back to safety.But Mikey’s greatest example of courage can only be described as, the most inspiring example of courage and sacrifice to a family. One day on patrol Mikey’s platoon came under fire from an ambush while being on an open rooftop when a grenade landed right by his feet. Mikey could have jumped down the stairs and been safe but the grenade would have killed his platoon mates so instead, he did the opposite, he jumped on top of a live grenade saving his platoon mates including Rorke's and even after being airlifted to a hospital Mikey died thirty minutes later.
