In the story of Odyssey, addiction is presented in the lotus eaters’ chapter. The lotus flower gives people a feeling of happiness. It helps them escape reality, and get away from their problems of war, trauma, and more. The lotus eaters and the lotus flower represent people's addiction to drugs. Drugs help addicted people get away from the pain and get away. The lotus flower works the same way. The lotus flower puts people in a trance to feel happy and not feel any pain. It makes you feel happy, and the need for more. To the point where you now desire this happiness, which causes people to become drug addicts. People might say, “Just stop taking drugs' or “It's not that hard just quit”. But in reality drugs have factors that make it hard to “just quit”. It alters your brain, so you know you desire it. You can't live without it. The brain remembers how the high feels and then becomes obsessed and desires the substance. The brain wants to achieve the high again, so it becomes more important and desirable. Then because of this desire, you are now addicted to drugs. Her addiction was causing her to lose things in life. Drugs don’t have a positive effect on people’s lives. Drugs bring long effects on people, and addiction makes it hard to get away from them. Drugs are a struggle for people to walk away from. Drugs aren't a one-man show. People need help and therapy to be able to get back on their feet most of the time. People just try to abruptly stop taking drugs, but their body becomes so “connected” with the drugs; your brain now relies on them. You are now off drugs.
