Sadly, the author and family mentioned in the book had to become refugees and be on the run from authorities, applying for asylum, and facing discrimination. Daniel Nayeri, in the book Everything Sad Is Untrue, conveys the theme that having resilience in life is what defines you and your attitude affects others around you. Throughout the story, we are presented with multiple interactions of the author and his family between discrimination, bullying, and abuse. Daniel’s mom, for example, had a death threat given to her by a group of people who followed a different religion. They threatened to kill her and threatened her family too because the symbol of the cross hung from her care mirror. The group made sure to leave a heavy impression, “If we see this cross again, we’ll kill you” (Nayeri 207). Daniels's mother was faced with unfair and cruel treatment by a group of committee men who held power over citizens. The group of individuals even went as far as to threaten the lives of her and her family. The mother actually got kidnapped by these men in order for them to prove a point. Sima, Daniels's mother, didn't let anyone attempt to bring her down, “Then she got a cross so big it blocked half the windshield and she put it up” (Nayeri 207). Daniel’s mother wasn't going to have her beliefs restricted or silenced by other people. His mother became rebellious toward the group of prejudiced people. Sima, Daniel, and Daniel's sister ended up fleeing the country just to be safe. If they ever came back to the country, they would kill them. In the end, it was resilience that brought this family back together when it felt like they were separating and each other's moral values that shed onto one
